Midnight blue napkins, silver and white candlelight, with soft olive branches down the center. Gold coins at every place make the table feel festive the moment guests sit down.
The deep blue grounds the table, so the candlelight and silver really glow. Olive leaves soften all that shine and nod to the oil at the heart of the story.
The palette
Six colors carry the whole table. Keep every metal silver, so the gold coins are the one warm spark.
- Midnight blue
- Lamp blue
- Silver
- Olive
- Candle white
- Antique gold
What goes on the table
The look sits on plain white plates, simple flatware and clear glasses. These are the pieces that make it Hanukkah.
- A pressed white or ivory tablecloth
- Midnight blue napkins, one per guest
- A silver napkin ring for each napkin
- An olive branch garland down the middle of the table, one 6 ft length for every 6 feet
- White tapers in silver holders, one on each side of the centerpiece
- Blue glass votives with tealights between the tapers
- Chocolate gelt, three coins at each place
- Place cards and a menu from Place Card Studio
The flower centerpiece
One low glass bowl of olive branches, white flowers and blue thistle sits in the middle of the garland. No experience needed: a tape grid across the top holds every stem where you put it.
Ranunculus can be hard to find in December. White roses work the same way. Buy the flowers 1 or 2 days before the party.
The Styling Guide walks through it in numbered steps with a drawing for each stage: conditioning the flowers the day before, building the greens, then adding the flowers and thistle.
Details that make it
Small choices do most of the work.
- Coins on the plate. Guests have something to unwrap right away, and children love it.
- Blue glass between the tapers. The votives add a low, soft glow under the taller flames.
- Silver only. Keeping every metal silver makes the gold coins the one warm spark.
Make it yours
The look adapts to the table you have.
- Round table. Set the centerpiece in the middle, coil the garland around it, and add three tapers and two votives in the ring.
- A smaller party. For 4 guests, one garland, one centerpiece and two tapers are enough. Add two votives.
- A bigger party. Add a garland for each extra 6 feet of table, plus one more centerpiece with a taper and two votives around it.
- Every night of the eight. Keep the garland on the table all week. Refresh the coins and the napkins for each dinner.
- From what you own. Any navy napkins and silver or glass candlesticks work.
Host tips
A few habits that make the evening run smoothly.
- Let the repeats carry it. What guests notice first is whatever appears at every seat. Three coins in the same spot on each plate turn a simple setting into a pattern.
- Steady every taper. If a taper leans in its holder, wrap a thin strip of foil around the base and press it back in. It stays upright all evening.
- An odd number of guests. Seat the extra person at the head of the table, so both long sides stay even.
- Short a napkin ring?. Fold that napkin in thirds and lay it flat to the left of the forks. Next to the others, it reads as a choice.
- Silver and photos. Silver and blue glass catch every lamp in the room. Turn off the overhead light before you take a picture, so only candlelight shows on the metal.
- Pieces that work twice. Midnight blue napkins and silver rings suit a winter dinner or New Year's Eve as well. Buy once and set them all season.
